'Homophobic' Greencoat Boy pub claim investigated

The police are investigating a pub in Westminster, London, because a member of staff allegedly refused to serve a gay group in a row. The group was refused because of their sexuality. The police confirm that an allegation that a homophobic incident took place was reported. After this allegation, the pub hung a rainbow flag in the pub window. This type of flag is often used to symbolise the Gay Pride movement. The owner, Punch Taverns, suspended a staff member because of the incident. Many people are hurt and shocked by this incident. A member of the gay group stated that everybody was shocked and outraged and they feel that this attitude is unacceptable. The owner cannot point out enough that everybody is welcome in his pub and that this incident will never happen again and he feels sorry for what happened in his pub.
I totally agree with the fact that the member of staff is suspended, but I do not think that this is enough punishment. If I was the owner of this pub, I would fire my employee immediately. I think this type of incident is very unacceptable. It is not fair that you refuse to serve a gay group because of the fact that they are gay. It is fine that you have your own opinion about homosexuals, but if you are having such problems with it, do not decide to work in a pub. When you work in a pub, you meet a lot of different people, and if you cannot handle it, quit!

Instead of firing the guy, perhaps what he needs is a good conversation about the subject homosexuality. Perhaps he is not homophobic at all but was there something else that happened that evening. Although I don't care what kind of sexual preference people have, I think the reaction of several politicians was exaggerated. In most countries, gay people cannot marry or have no rights at all, and even in western Europe there are a lot of people who don't feel comfortable with them.
ReplyDeleteI think that he should be fired.. The pub will now loose his good reputation because of one staff member. I think he should apologise for his behaviour. He should leave his opinion and work seperated.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I think it is good that the staff member is suspended, although I do not know if this is going to help. When he comes back he has to serve gay people again and I wonder if his attitude would have changed. They have to talk about this seriously before he can come back and he has to apologize to the people he did not want to serve. I also think it is a bit hypocrite to hang a rainbow flag in the window.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Romy. People who are too one-sided to accept other people's sexuality or religion should not work in a place where they have to be socially active. I also agree with Tim that this man needs to learn more about homosexuality and their history. So that he also learns something from them in stead of getting more angry with them because they caused him his job.
